    What is a MAGIC Conference?

A typical MAGIC conference is planned to address major clinical, policy and leadership issues related to care of older adults and those in long-term care settings in Minnesota. In 2021, we had Ashton Applewhite as our keynote speaker.  Ashton is the internationally recognized author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism.  We also had speakers on topics will including challenging practical issues such as sleep disturbances, diabetes, what we have learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, recent changes in long-term care regulations, and self-care for professionals. In a one-and-a-half-day workshop format, we also discussed equity and diversity in long-term care. MAGIC invites clinicians and students from all specialties, professions and the general public to attend.

MAGIC is pleased to release this video highlighting the recommended workflow for filling out a Provider Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form with a new skilled nursing facility or assisted living resident. The POLST Video was created in partnership by MAGIC and the MMA. We encourage all providers to watch this video and to share with patients and families/surrogates of the patient. Watch the video

Minnesota Association of Geriatrics Inspired Clinicians – MAGIC - supports vaccine requirement for health care employees

Minnesota, August 4, 2021 - COVID-19 cases are once again rising in Minnesota with most new cases caused by the delta variant. Further, the majority of COVID related deaths in Minnesota occurred in long term care or assisted living facilities. Older adults and people with complex medical conditions continue to be at risk for severe adverse effects and death from this virus. The vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective and are the most powerful tools to protect our friends, families and communities. It is supported in research that vaccination significantly reduces the risk of acquiring COVID-19, and substantially reduces the risk of hospitalization or death from COVID-19.

Respected medical societies and organizations across the country recently issued a joint statement calling to require the COVID vaccine for all healthcare employees. As the statewide association of clinicians practicing geriatrics, MAGIC stands with the growing list of organizations and experts who support mandatory COVID-19 vaccination for healthcare employees. The protection and safety of those we serve far outweigh the costs of not being vaccinated. Together we can ensure vibrant, safe communities for older adults, others with medical conditions, and their caregivers.

The Minnesota Association of Geriatrics Inspired Clinicians (MAGIC) is a membership organization whose purpose is to support its members as they advocate for and serve older adults and those with complex medical needs. Its predecessor organization, the Minnesota Medical Directors Association, was founded in 1978. MMDA was reintroduced as MAGIC in 2017 as an organization with broader membership in response to the changing paradigm of care for older, and medically complex persons. MAGIC is proud to be the leading geriatric provider organization in the state.
